abagOnline is now offering Japanese language menus on our home page and second level directories. We have entertained many visitors from Japan interested in local government use of the Internet. The posting of these menus is an experiment in increasing the accessibility to, and navigation ease of, abagOnline. At this time the Japanese language pages are viewable through machines with a Japanese operating system, or through Internet Explorer 3 or 4, with a free matching plug-in from Microsoft. The pages may also be viewed in Netscape 4 with a shareware helper application. Future pages are planned for Spanish and Chinese languages.

ABAG's annual short-term forecast of economic activity in the nine-county San Francisco Bay Region will take place January 29th. The Conference will feature guest speakers Ted Gibson, Chief Economist of the California State Dept. of Finance, and Leslie Appleton-Young, Chief Economist & Vice-President of the California Association of Realtors. ABAG's biennial demographic and economic forecast of growth in the nine-county San Francisco Bay Region was released December 11th. The report forecasts 1.4 million new jobs and a population increase of 1.4 million people between 1995 and 2020. Projections 98 contains data for the nine counties and 100 cities in the Bay Area and forecasts jobs (by major industry sector), population, households and income. Copies of the report may be ordered online.

The State of the Estuary report prepared by the San Francisco Estuary Program is now available online. This landmark report from 1992 was the basis for the SFEP program direction up through today. The entire SFEP web site has been redesigned for easier reading.

A bill was introduced by Senator Leahy to the 105th Congress to amend section 332 of the Communications Act of 1934 to preserve State and local authority to regulate the placement, construction, and modification of certain telecommunications facilities, including antennas.The bill may be found on the Net through Thomas. ABAG is pleased to release a new report focusing on transportation problems in earthquakes. Past earthquakes have only been "driver's training" for emergency transportation response planning in the San Francisco Bay Area. This report offers predictions of the impacts of 11 future likely earthquakes on the region's surface transportation system. It also reviews key transportation system users in emergencies, summarizes the current preparedness activities of Bay Area transportation providers, and provides a series of checklists of recommendations.
