What's New at ABAG The Green Business program is a partnership among business leaders, environmental groups, non-profit organizations, and local governments around the Bay. The goal of the program is to encourage public support and patronage of environmentally responsible businesses by recognizing those businesses that demonstrate ongoing compliance with environmental regulationsas well as excellence in pollution prevention and resource conservation.
The City of San Carlos has been awarded the "Best of the Web" National Award for the best local government Web site in the U.S. This award is jointly sponsored by Government Technology Magazine, Public Technology Inc. and the International City/County Management Association.
The Alameda County Waste Management Authority has created a Web site with information about source reduction and waste recycling.
Is the issue of citizen acceptance of new wireless antenna sites resolved? Not if the Marin County experience is any indicator, where the Planning Commission recently turned down Pacific Bell's request for antenna sites, according to a report in the San Francisco Examiner. Addressing this issue and other challenges posed by the Telecommunications Act of 1996 are two workshops for local government planners, attorneys and managers announced by ABAG for October 7 and 18, 1996.
The Power Purchasing Pool is a new ABAG service program, designed to enable local governments to achieve more competitive pricing from natural gas and electricity suppliers. The pool is open to all ABAG members and cooperating members and to other local governments and special districts in Northern California (PG&E service territory) on a case-by-case basis.
The City of Oakland has developed an exciting new feature on their Web site. Parcel information for specific properties is becoming available including dynamic image mapping from an underlying database. The Virtual Permit Center is also adding the ability to apply for permits online. Check it out.

The cities of San Ramon and Albany provide two new Web sites to explore. Environmental and Planning Electronic Clearinghouse posts Environmental
Impact Reports (EIR's), Planning Documents, and Proposed Federal Actions
of the Bay Area in an effort to facilitate imput to the environmental and
planning review process.
The fall schedule of hazardous materials training courses available through the ABAG Training Center has now been posted on abagOnline. Additional courses in environmental planning, Internet, and management will be posted soon. And, you can now register online using the new secure registration form.
The bus is here. The Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District now has a site on the World Wide Web. They join a growing list of Bay Area regional agencies and special districts on the Internet.
The Metropolitan Transportation Commission now has a site on the World Wide Web. MTC plans, finances, and coordinates transportation projects for the nine-county Bay Area.
Also, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District now publishes air quality forecasts online. Visit http://www.sparetheair.org .
Debuting today is the Bay Area's Telecomm Network, a regional resource of contacts, agreements, current information, and other resource links in the rapidly-developing area of telecommunications.
The County of Santa Clara now has a site on the World Wide Web. You'll find links to Bay Area Counties on abagOnline's Local Government pages.
ABAG publications, including bestsellers such as the multi-media CD-ROM On Shaky Ground, can now be purchased with confidence online. All that's required is the Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.0 Web browser. The Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) in these browsers allows safe and secure transmission of credit card information to ABAG.
