ABAG Earthquake Quiz - Answer 6

Answer #6 Fiction!

Shaking can still be severe in areas underlain by bedrock. This is true even though bedrock, particularly rock such as granite, does not amplify the shaking that occurs. On the other hand, all ground in the Bay Area was not created equal. As is more commonly understood, deep, loose soils tend to amplify and prolong shaking. The worst such soils in the Bay Area are the loose clays bordering the Bay -- the Bay mud -- and the filled areas. The remaining materials fall between these two extremes, with the deeper soils in the valleys shaking more than the rocks in the hills. ABAG, the Association of Bay Area Governments, is the regional planning and services agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area. This information is based on the ABAG reports, "The San Francisco Bay Area - On Shaky Ground."
