ABAG Earthquake Quiz - Answer 8

Answer #8 Fiction!

Bracing your cripple walls and bolting your foundation do not guarantee that your home will be undamaged. This type of work only makes your home safer and statistically less likely to be so heavily damaged that you will be unable to live in it following an earthquake until it is repaired. Other, nonstructural, damage may still occur, as well, such as wall cracks, fallen chimneys, cupboard doors opening to allow dishes to crash to the floor unless they are fitted with “positive” latches (that is, you must move a latch to allow you to open the door) and large bookcases toppling if not screwed into a wall stud. ABAG, the Association of Bay Area Governments, is the regional planning and services agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area. This information is based on the ABAG reports, "The San Francisco Bay Area - On Shaky Ground."
