Notes:
- OSB
- Code may deem oriented strand board ("OSB") not equivalent to plywood for a particular location (i.e., "wet" climates)
- OSB may not be appropriate in environments where there is substantial moisture in the air.
- Plywood Strength
- Plywood strength is governed by
- Plywood fitness
- Plywood grade
- Size and number of fasteners
- Do not substitute sheathing or fastener materials without first checking with the engineer or local building department
- The contractor may be liable if changes to materials cannot match the strength provided in the design
- Use specified nails
- Provide the proper nail size for each location specified in plans
- If the plans call for use of a ten-penny common nail, then do not use an eight-penny box nail
- The strength difference is 63 lbs vs. 94 lbs
- An engineer and/or the local building department must approve substitutions or changes.
- Do not use nails other than those specified
- Do not use nails with clipped heads
- Do not apply coating to fasteners prior to installation
- Do not substitute screws and staples for nails
- If nails other than common are used, the connection will usually not satisfy strength requirements and will be considered in many instances to be below the applicable standard of care
- Follow the nailing directions in the plans
