The purpose of the 1999 Campaign is to promote, demonstrate and implement the use of grasscycling practices among local residents that diminish the volume of residential derived grass clippings being disposed of in California landfills. The 1999 Campaign Task Force is comprised of the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) and the participating agencies in Contra Costa, Napa, and Solano counties. The Task Force, working in alliance with local jurisdictions, industry sponsors and public agency cooperators, will develop appropriate Campaign materials; and plan, sponsor, and carryout a series of outreach promotional activities and educational events directed at area residents.
The California Integrated Waste Management Board's (CIWMB) Greening Team, established as part of the CIWMBs strategic planning process, has identified grass clippings generated from urban residential landscapes as a primary target to assist local jurisdictions in achieving their mandated 50 percent diversion requirement. In support of the Greening Team Performance Plan Target 1, the Campaign objectives are:
(1) Producing and disseminating educational materials to area residents that outline the practical benefits of using grasscycling and provide "how to" information on the techniques of grasscycling;
(2) Promoting outreach activities and events that demonstrate, display and explain the use of grasscycling practices and techniques to the general public; and
(3) Implementing grasscycling practices among a significant number of area residents to provide a measurable increase in grasscycling activity.
