How to Participate |
The County of Solano, County of Napa, Val-Core Recycling, the Upper Valley Waste Management Authority (UVA) and the Cities of Napa, American Canyon, Fairfield, Suisun, and Vacaville are conducting the Grasscycle!-Clip Your Waste Campaign to increase the practice of grasscycling. Grasscycling is recognized as an effective and low cost method to divert grass clippings from landfill disposal. All program participants recognize the inherent benefits of grasscycling as part of current waste management practices. Grass clippings continue to be a large component of disposed organic waste. Grasscycling offers residents the opportunity to benefit from this waste material in a cost-effective way. We will use this campaign, operating throughout both Napa and Solano Counties to educate residents, commercial landscapers, and others about the economic and environmental benefits of grasscycling. Participation in the CIWMB sponsored Grasscycling Outreach Campaign will help us accomplish this goal.
Solano County along with member communities and waste management agencies utilize a variety of programs and activities to help residents and businesses divert green waste from landfills. These activities range from public education programs on small scale and backyard composting, to curbside green waste collection and drop-off points. Although these activities divert sizable amounts of green waste, there is green waste that continues to be contaminated with other waste and then landfilled. Medium to large landscape contractors often are unaware of the potential offered by prevention strategies such as grasscycling. In many instances, large generators such as schools, residential developments and business parks also have limited ability to use existing diversion programs and are generally unaware of grasscycling.
Of course, the centralized recycling of green waste that is performed requires significant capital investment in terms land and facilities and well as ongoing collection and processing costs in the form of labor, trucks, and processing equipment. This is money we must collect from our citizens, either as taxes or user fees. We hope that this campaign that will raise awareness for the need to grasscycle and educate residents, and businesses on the simple but effective ways that grasscycling can be performed.
