Bay Area Challenges

• Housing. With the burgeoning population, the availability of affordable housing has become one of the most pervasive issues in the Bay Area.
• Transportation. Imbalances in area employment and available housing have in turn increased traffic congestion to unsurpassed levels.
• Environment. Increased population and development call attention to the need for the Bay Area to protect and maintain its natural environment.
• Earthquakes. Earthquake preparedness is an enduring issue in the Bay Area, particularly since the destruction inflicted by the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake and in light of scientists' projections for other large earthquakes within the next 30 years.
• Equity. Housing and transportation challenges disproportionately impact low-income Bay Area residents.

These issues impact the lives of all who live in the region, extending beyond city and county borders. Over forty years ago, Bay Area leaders recognized the need to address common issues from a regional perspective. As a result, they formed a council of governments, named the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG).
