Asian Health Services

{short description of image} sian Health Service ("AHS") is a private, California nonprofit public benefit corporation and one of the major providers of health care and health education to low income Asian immigrant communities in Alameda County. AHS was founded in 1974 with a volunteer staff. It has grown to become a comprehensive primary care community clinic serving approximately 8,000 patients.

In 1995, the Authority issued $6,500,000 in Certificates of Participation ("COPs") to fund the construction of a new building for AHS. The COPs received an "A" rating from Standard & Poor's under a State of California bond insurance program for health facilities.

The new building replaced AHS' existing community health center's leased space and allowed AHS to increase its capacity from 16 to 24 examination rooms. In addition, the new clinic includes nursing stations, provider offices, community health education and patient education areas, a conference room and area available for future clinic expansion.

This project was very important to the Oakland area Asian immigrant community because the previous AHS clinic had operated at capacity for at least two years prior to the financing, while the area's Asian population grew significantly. Other Alameda County health clinics serving low income patients were overburdened as well, with one to two month waits for an appointment. The Authority's financing eased a portion of this unmet demand for low income health services.
